Speaking and Facilitation
My greatest interest has always involved innovating and integrating ways that emerging media technologies and activities might help us lead more interesting and productive lives.
I welcome opportunities to speak to people in large or small groups. I often use a conversational style where I can let the questions and responses of audience members guide and enrich the ideas I present, but I can direct-address effectively when asked.
I have made over 100 presentations to students, teachers, parents and media scholars in Canada and beyond (Europe, USA, Asia, Australia). In each of these encounters, I have shared concepts and strategies for effective communication and beneficial media management, consumption and production.
When speaking to teachers, I ask, “Who here is a special education teacher?” One or two people respond affirmatively, sometimes none. Then I explain that this is a trick question, that ALL of us are special education teachers. Each student is unique—with a unique set of learning skills—and media literacy is ideal for differentiating student learning to meet the needs of both capable and needy, experienced and novice students.
The same uniqueness applies to families. Each family member has a unique relationship to the media environment and requires a differentiated skillset to maximize their media experiences.
I find it especially gratifying when I meet someone who tells me how useful they found ideas I presented in a past presentation.
I have also organized, promoted and facilitated a large number of events, and am happy to do so again. These activities have included the booking of speakers & spaces, design & printing of posters, programs & web ads, booking catering and hosting & facilitating.
